Hieronymus Nopp, also Noppius (* around 1495 in Herzogenaurach ; † August 10, 1551 in Nuremberg ) was a German Protestant theologian , teacher , rector and reformer in Regensburg .

Life

Nothing is known about Jerome's youth. The first news is that of his matriculation on June 1, 1519 in Wittenberg . As a student he was employed as a teacher at the council school in Zwickau , where he stayed until 1536. He had married there too. The marriage remained childless. In the years 1537–1540 he was rector in Schneeberg .

On Martin Luther's recommendation, Nopp came to Regensburg as a preacher in 1543 , together with Nicolaus Gallus as a deacon. In February 1544, Nopp gave his trial sermon and was immediately elected as pastor. At the request of the council, he went to Wittenberg to obtain a doctorate and to be ordained . The theses put forward by Luther for his disputation are still available. They deal with justifying faith.

Nopp and Gallus became the reformers of Regensburg. They founded the church there, while the council created a consistory . The Reformation was able to develop and unfold undisturbed until 1546 . Nopp, who was mild and tolerant, was concerned primarily with matters of faith; politics was alien to him. In doing so, he took a very clear line.

So he first made sure that in 1543 the "beautiful Maria", who attracted pilgrims , was broken off. With the Augsburg Interim , this development was erased. Nopp was expelled from Regensburg with all employees and lived without a permanent office in the following years. He could no longer follow his call back to Regensburg in 1551; he had previously died in his refuge in Nuremberg.
