Life

Hildegard Breiner comes from Vorarlberg , where she and her late husband led the anti-nuclear campaign against the Zwentendorf nuclear power plant in the 1970s. In a referendum in 1978, 85% of voters in Vorarlberg voted against Zwentendorf. In the second half of the 1980s, Hildegard Breiner played an important role in the fight against the Wackersdorf nuclear reprocessing plant in neighboring Bavaria . In 1996 she initiated the “SonnenSchein” campaign, which was intended to raise awareness among Vorarlbergers for photovoltaics. As a result, the Vorarlberg state government made funds available for public relations and plant construction. The campaign resulted in solar power community systems being built in 30 of Vorarlberg's 96 municipalities within just two years. Hildegard Breiner is Vice President of the Austrian Nature Conservation Union , on whose website she is identified as the "grande dame of the commitment to alternative energies in Vorarlberg".
