Hilgenriedersiel is part of the Hagermarsch community , which has merged with the communities of Hage , Berumbur , Halbemond and Lütetsburg to form the Hage community. The place has the only natural swimming area on the East Frisian North Sea coast .

Surname

The name of the district has been spelled "Hilgenriedersyhl" since 1787. While the second part of the name refers to the location of the village by a sluice , the first part of the name of the place is reminiscent of the ancient and legendary Hilgenriede gully , translated: Holy River .

history

Wadden ferry designed by Philipp Schrimpf (1896)

Hilgenriedersiel had a sluice gate , which has been proven since 1576 and through which part of the former Hilgenried Bay was drained until the 1920s. In 1866 the wooden sluice was broken off and replaced by a stone sluice. In 1925 it was closed due to a lack of receiving water. Today a monument commemorates the historic Siel.

In the past, Hilgenriedersiel gained a certain importance for passenger and mail traffic with the offshore island of Norderney . A mudflat track was laid east of the Hilgenried outer low, which was officially put into operation in 1844. A post beacon on the wadden side of the island of Norderney , which still exists today, served as a guide . The means of transport were a team of horses and a wooden wagon with wide wheels. On a Prussian map from 1881, this connection between the mainland and the island, which was partially fortified with rubble, is called the Post Weg . Regular passenger transport on this route was postponed as early as 1873, as the post office no longer wanted to take responsibility for the safety of passengers after an accident in which nobody was killed. By this time, a number of prominent tourists had also used the carriage connection across the mudflats. Among them were the Duke of Cumberland (from 1837 King Ernst August I of Hanover) and the later Chancellor Otto von Bismarck (1844), who was one of the first users of the regular postal service.

In 1892, the post also stopped the remaining regular mail and parcel transport to the island. From this point on, it used the now expanded Norddeich port for island mail. However , the Hilgenrieder Wattweg was still used by private forwarders until 1949.

At the end of the 19th century, the Berlin government architect Philipp Schrimpf suggested establishing a connection between Hilgenriedersiel and Norderney that was independent of the tide . In this context he published a study in 1896 with the title: The Watt ferry. A new means of improving travel connections to the German North Sea resorts, especially to Norderney . Schrimpf's proposal was rejected because of the high cost.

Infrastructure

Since 2010, Hilgenriedersiel has been the landing point for various submarine cables that bring the electricity generated by the new offshore wind farms in the southern German Bight into the high-voltage network near Diele ; including HVDC BorWin 1 and BorWin 2 as well as alpha ventus .
