Hillin of Falmagne
Hillin von Falmagne , also Hillin von Fallemanien , Fallenmaigne or Falemagne or ( Latin ) Hillinus Trevirensis (* around 1100 - 23 October 1169 in Trier ), was Archbishop of Trier from 1152 to 1169 .
Life
Hillin came from the family of the Lords of Falmagne in the Liege area . He received his training in France . He is said to have been an educated man who had connections to Bernhard von Clairvaux , Hildegard von Bingen and Elisabeth von Schönau .
Hillin came to Trier in 1130 and headed the cathedral school here from 1142. In 1150 he was appointed cathedral dean and in 1152 he was elected archbishop of Trier. In the same year Friedrich Barbarossa became King of the Romans. Hillin supported his election and took part in Barbarossa's Italian campaign in 1154/55. Hillin was present as the legate of Pope Hadrian IV at Barbarossa's coronation as emperor .
With Barbarossa's help, Hillin defended himself against Count Palatine Konrad the Staufer , who, as the emperor's half-brother, supported the citizens of Trier in their efforts to achieve imperial immediacy . In the conflict between Barbarossa and the papacy in 1159, Hillin initially sided with the emperor and recognized the antipope Viktor IV , who also made him his legate. However, in 1165 Hillin changed his mind and recognized Alexander III. as the rightful Pope.
Hillin built the east side of Trier Cathedral . On August 24, 1156, he consecrated the not yet fully completed Maria Laach Abbey Church . Around 1160 he further expanded Ehrenbreitstein Castle ; he renewed the archbishop's houses, deepened the neck ditch , built the pentagonal keep behind it and had a cistern built.
