Hilmar Sturm
Hilmar Sturm , also called "Hil" , (born August 14, 1939 in Graz , † April 12, 1982 at Großvenediger , Tyrol ) was an Austrian mountaineer .
Life
Born in 1939 as the first child of Adele and Heinrich Sturm. Together with his two younger brothers, he grew up on their parents' farm in Raaba . After elementary and secondary school, he worked as a blacksmith and locksmith at the Spari company in Raaba. His mother taught him and his brothers a love for the mountains and after the Styrian mountains many other Austrian peaks were climbed. His favorite mountain was the Hochschwab , where he was out in summer and winter. From 1968 Hilmar Sturm took part in several expeditions in the Hindu Kush , the Himalayas and the Karakoram , including important first ascent and first ascents. He has also climbed peaks in East Africa , Alaska and Peru . In 1980 he received the Great Decoration of Honor of the State of Styria for his services to the State of Styria , awarded by Josef Krainer .
Only a few weeks before a planned expedition to the K2 he slipped on a ski tour on the Großvenediger while descending, fell into a snow hole and drowned in the stream below.
