Hilton is a city in the South African province of KwaZulu-Natal . It is located in the uMgungundlovu district in the uMngeni municipality .

geography

In 2011, Hilton had 9,340 residents.

The city is located in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands far above the city of Pietermaritzburg, twelve kilometers south-east . To the northwest lies the town of Howick .

history

A farm in what is now the urban area was named in 1860 by the farmer's wife Jane Henderson Hilton , who was reminded of the town of Hilton in Staffordshire , England . The farm was next to the farm Groenekloof one Buren , the early one destination for Voortrekker was. In 1872 the Reverend William Orde Newnham opened the Hilton College boarding school about eight kilometers north of the city , which is still one of the country's leading private schools and is only attended by boys. School fees are considered to be the highest in South Africa. St. Anne's Diocesan College , an Anglican boarding school for girls, has been based in Hilton since 1903 .

Economy and Transport

Hilton is on National Route 3 , which runs east of the place and connects Durban with the Johannesburg area, and the roughly parallel R103, which runs through Hilton. The city was on the Natal Main Line from 1884 to 1916 , which now runs through the Cedara Tunnel .

The Natal Railway Museum is located at the former train station .
