The Himmlischen Kicker were a church soccer team of the North Elbian Church , which was founded in 1986 and supported the work of Bread for the World with charity games nationwide for over 27 years .

history

The beginnings of the player formation lay in a student council of the Kiel theological faculty , when theology students got together for a university tournament. The successes were built on in 1986 when Wolf-Matthias Gallien reunited former fellow students for a memory game. For the first five years the kickers formed under the name SpVgg Angelipa (Spielvereinigung Angeliter Pastoren) , before they were renamed into the then common name Heavenly Kickers . In the first few years, the team was also opened up to all church employees of the North Elbian Church and women also played in the core team. The game association existed for 27 years and played more than 250 games throughout Germany during this time.

First game

The first game took place on June 17, 1986 against a DRK selection in Boren . The Himmlischen Kicker denied this as SpVgg Angelipa. They won the game 4: 3 and generated proceeds of 1133 D-Marks for an aid project in Burkina Faso .

Last game

The last game took place on May 4, 2013 at the 34th Kirchentag in Hamburg as part of the German Popen Open Kirchentag tournament on the Memellandallee sports field in Hamburg-Altona .

Jerseys

Traditionally, the team played in orange jerseys with the black print Bread for the World . The aid organization did not pay any sponsorship money, but received the requested fee. In addition, the field players wore either white trousers and orange-colored stockings or, in the case of shirts with black sleeves, black trousers and black stockings.

successes

During the 27 years of the team's existence, a total of over 122,000 euros was raised for the charitable purposes of Bread for the World. The team advertised that the winners were certain before each kick-off, no matter how the game ended. The Christian footballers wanted to do something against child labor with their donations and are committed to fighting AIDS .

team

After initially only former theology students had formed the team, representatives of the various church professional groups soon played. At times the team was able to fall back on a mixed-gender player pool of around 40 kickers. Usually between 10 and 15 benefit games were played each year.

Personalities and tournaments

Again and again, the team invited personalities for the symbolic kick-off of a charity game, among them were

  • Bishop Maria Jepsen opened the football derby against the selection team of African pastors in Hamburg on June 13, 2010 at the start of the 2010 World Cup
  • Alexander Knappe , opened the last charity game on June 17, 2012 in Eutin against the Eutin Lions

Individual players

  • Wolf-Matthias Gallien, founder and captain of Heavenly Kicker for 26 years (102 games with captain's armband ). Was pastor in Scharbeutz -Klingenberg for many years and finally religious teacher at the vocational school of the Ostholstein district .
  • Thomas Jacobsen, successor to Wolf-Matthias Gallien and administrative director of the Hamburg-West / Südholstein church district, was a Hiki manager who played Hiki for decades and ensured the extensive organization of the benefit games. Thomas Röhlk, pastor from Flensburg, was at his side.
  • Enno Haaks , longtime striker . Was first pastor in Pinneberg and Santiago de Chile and then general secretary of the Gustav-Adolf-Werk .
  • Jörg Salewski, captain in the last tournament on the church conference in Hamburg and administrative head of the Church Kreisverband Hamburg .

Tournaments

As a rule, the team could be bought for a minimum donation of 250 euros in order to compete against other hobby teams (e.g. Eutin Lions, Pälzer Parre, selection team of African pastors) at regional church days or community festivals. But they also played against celebrity teams like the FC Landtag, a team around the actor Peter Lohmeyer ( Das Wunder von Bern ), an NDR selection or against the HSV Old League and FC St. Pauli .
