politics

In June 2018 Lührssen became a member of the Alternative for Germany (AfD). When the Bremen state executive co-opted him and two other members into the party leadership , his membership became public. Andrea Schafarczyk, editor-in-chief of Radio Bremen, then said that Lührssen's AfD commitment was his private decision, but that they now want to talk to him about what exactly he is up to. The station stands for independence and diversity and everyone who works there is committed to these values. A spokesman for the station told the taz that Lührssen would not be “present in the program” during the upcoming 2019 election campaign . The company i & u TV , which produces stern TV for RTL Television , also announced that it would wait for Lührssen to comment. After six appearances for stern TV in the current year 2018, further contributions with him are currently not planned.

Lührssen justified his accession by stating that Bremen and Bremerhaven needed a “strong conservative force”. There had to be clear, conservative answers to issues such as "the ongoing waste of taxpayers' money, the enormous debt of both cities, the failures in education policy and the helplessness and inaction in asylum policy." He wanted a fair one within the AfD Use of the media and the continued existence of the public broadcasters and, conversely, hope for fairness.

In January 2019, Lührssen applied as the top candidate of the AfD for the upcoming Bremen citizenship election, but was defeated by the state chairman Frank Magnitz . In February he resigned from the AfD after "internal party disputes" and joined the voters' association Bürger in Anger (BIW). He declared that the BIW stood for "a solid policy without machinations". At the end of February, the BIW elected him as the top candidate for the Bremen election on the proposal of the board of directors. However, he did not succeed in entering the citizenry.
