Job of Pochayiv

Job of Pochaiv ( Ukrainian Йов Почаївський , job Potschajiwskyj * about 1551 in Galicia , now western Ukraine; † 25. October 1651 in Pochaiv ), whose real name is John ( Іоан, Ioan ), a Ukrainian was abbot and saint of the Orthodox Church .

Life

At the age of ten, John was so mature that he was accepted in Uhornyky in the Monastery of the Transfiguration of Christ . Two years later he received the tonsure and the name Job. He was ordained a priest at the age of thirty . He was then given the job of overseer of the monastery of the Holy Cross in Dubno . For 20 years he devoted himself as abbot to writing and the task of disseminating spiritual literature. His own works were later published under the title "Book of the venerable Job von Pochayev, written by hand".

When tensions between the Catholic and Orthodox Churches intensified in 1596 as a result of the Union of Brest , Job and the monastery were in great distress because the monastery is close to the border with Catholic Poland. Because of the strong missionary efforts of the Polish Catholics, Job wrote a great deal in defense of Orthodox doctrine. He is particularly offended by his criticism of the Catholic practice of using unleavened bread in the liturgy .

Among the books that he printed and distributed was the first complete Orthodox Bible edition , with the support of Prince Konstanty Wasyl Ostrogski . In 1604 he came to the Dormition Monastery of Pochayev and was elected abbot there. There he became a strict ascetic. He was silent, spoke few words and even the few words that came out of his lips were those of Jesus' prayer . For many days and weeks he locked himself in his cave and lived lost in prayer. Some monks said he saw the Tabor light . Job introduced some reforms in the monastery and enforced stricter discipline. In 1628 he took part in the Synod of Kiev , where he spoke out against any union effort with the Catholic Church. Job died in 1651 and was canonized shortly afterwards.

Remembrance day
