Hippocampus pontohi ( Syn .: Hippocampus severnsi Lourie & Kuiter, 2008 ) is a small seahorse from the "Bargibanti species complex". It occurs on the coasts of Sulawesi and was found at Bunaken , in the Lembeh Strait , at Wakatobi , and at Sorong in the far west of the New Guinea Vogelkop Peninsula at depths of eleven to 25 meters. It was scientifically described in 2008.

features

Hippocampus pontohi becomes 16 to 17 mm long and is mostly yellow-brown in color, but there are also beige to almost white specimens. Some have a red back. Its trunk is protected by twelve and the tail by 26 to 28 rings of bones. The dorsal fin has 14 fin rays, the pectoral fins nine to ten. The anal fin is small or absent. The muzzle is short and not thickened at the end. The gill openings have grown together to form a single outlet opening in the middle of the back of the head.

Way of life

Hippocampus pontohi lives in the calcareous alga Halimeda and on the hydroid Aglaephenia cupressina . It is usually found in pairs and is relatively lively for a seahorse of the "bargibanti species complex". Two specimens collected had eleven embryos each in their abdomen.
