Hispasat 55W-1 (or Amazonas 1 ) is a television satellite from the Spanish satellite operator Hispasat . It primarily provides offers for residents of Latin American countries. It was the fifth satellite launched by Hispasat and the sixth satellite on Astrium's Eurostar 3000 satellite platform .

reception

The satellite can be received in Europe , North Africa as well as North and South America , the transmission takes place in the C and Ku band . For this purpose, the spacecraft built by Airbus and Astrium on the basis of the Eurostar 3000S satellite bus has been equipped with 27 C and 36 Ku-band transponders (19 C and 32 Ku-band transponders can be operated simultaneously), and in particular with one for the first time in space used AmerHis communication system called based on the DVB-processor Alcatel 9343 DVB.

Capacity expansion

With the launch of Amazonas 2 on October 1, 2009 at 21:59  UTC (together with the military communications satellite COMSATBw-1 ' ) on an Ariane 5 ECA from the Center Spatial Guyanais , the operator Hispasat expanded its capacity.

The launch of Amazonas 3 took place on February 7, 2013, that of Amazonas 4A on 22 March 2014 that of the Amazon 5 on September 11 2017th

Use and shutdown

Shortly after reaching the intended deployment position and the test and commissioning phase on August 16, 2004, a gradual loss of pressure in one of his oxidizer tanks for his chemical drive system was found, the cause of which is presumably a faulty valve. As a result, it was assumed that the possible usability of the satellite would be shortened to five to ten years. Ultimately, however, the satellite could be used commercially for more than twelve years. Amazonas 1 spent most of its operating time at a position at 61 ° West. As of 2014, the satellite was at 55 ° West according to an agreement with Intelsat . There it was last called Hispasat 55W-1. Hispasat announced on June 23, 2017 that Hispasat 55W-1 had been steered into a cemetery orbit and switched off there. The maneuvers began on June 19, 2017 and brought the satellite into a 300 km higher orbit.
