Hitra cesta H1

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Hitra cesta H1 ( Slovenian for 'expressway H1') was a two-lane motorized road that led from the Karawanken tunnel to the Croatian border.

History

In Yugoslav times, the later H1 was the most important transport link in Slovenia and part of the Autoput Bratstvo i jedinstvo, which ran across Yugoslavia . Until the start of the expansion of the A2, the line was a trunk road and ran continuously from Jesenice to the border with the Socialist Republic of Croatia.

With the opening of the parallel sections of the A2, the H1 was gradually downgraded to a regional road or used directly as a route for the motorway.

The route was two-lane and had no hard shoulder. Long traffic jams on this route used to be the rule during vacation periods. The H1 was also considered to be one of the most dangerous roads in Slovenia, especially between Ljubljana and the Croatian border. Between 2004 and 2010, 550 accidents with 39 deaths occurred here. On June 30, 2010, the last remaining section between Trebnje and Hrastje was replaced by the A2.
