history

West elevation of the church

The church was built in 1776. During the renovation in 1908, the church received its current appearance. On the memorial plaques in the entrance area of the church, under the entrance of the church tower, the donors who gave money for the reconstruction of the church are entered. Count Rudolf von Kotek gave most of the money for the reconstruction , namely 3000 crowns. Most of the donations ranged from 300 to 555 kroner and were donated by the Serb population from Futog.

The size, beauty and luxurious inventory of the Serbian Orthodox Church of Futog speak in their own way of the former wealth and importance of Futog for northern Serbia. The saying comes from this time: When Novi Sad was still near Futog . In the churchyard there is a small cemetery where famous Futog citizens are buried. Among the most important are the graves of the wife and children of the Serbian Hajduken Jovan Jovanović Zmaj . The grave of his daughter Smiljana Jovanović is particularly well preserved. In 2004 the church was extensively renovated or restored.

architecture

The baroque steeple of the church

The monumental dimensions and the slender silhouette of the church tower dominate the cityscape. The nave was erected as an elongated cross with a semicircular apse and a rectangular choir, flat like a ray. A baroque church tower has been built on the west side of the church .

The interior of the church was built with pilasters and columns and divided into bays. In the western part of the nave, the new choir is supported by tall, thin iron columns. The nave was vaulted so that a barrel vault was created. With the help of additional pilasters, the long sides of the nave were also slightly arched. Capitals with characteristic plastic decoration in the form of curtains with tassels were built on the pilasters, which was an important element of the Baroque in Serbia at that time .

The choirs are outside the triangular tympanum . Nine columns were erected at the entrances to the church in the west, north and south parts of the church, three each for one side. The church is painted with baroque frescoes of Byzantine art. The archpriest's throne and the choirs are also painted with frescoes. The style of wall painting with its stylistic features can be traced back to the workshop of the Macedonian painter Janko Holkozović .

Iconostasis

In 1799 Arsenije Teodorović painted the icons of the iconostasis . In this early work by Arsenije Teodorović, noticeable influences of the late baroque can be recognized. Teodor Ilić Češljar had already used this style of icon painting for another church.

An important collection of icons by Pavle Simić from the 14th century is kept in the church. This collection was after the destruction of the old Annunciation - Chapel of Vašarište brought into the church. A composition of themes relating to All Saints Mother Mary is painted on the church vault, this is supposed to symbolize the protective role of All Saints Mother for the Church and the city of Futog. In connection with the symbolism of the icons of the iconostasis in front of the altar , the Last Supper was also painted in the church vault, while in the west of the church a wall painting of the Last Judgment serves as a warning to more virtuous life.
