action

A nameless migrant worker ( hobo ) lands after a trip on a freight train in the city of Hopetown, where he wants to start a new life. He dreams of buying a lawnmower so that he can earn money as a landscaper. To do this, he collects empties.

The city is ruled by gang boss Drake and his sons Ivan and Slick. The hobo has to watch how Drake and his sons abuse his own brother and finally kill him brutally in front of the assembled audience. The hobo observes one of Drake's sons who, together with his friends, wants to attack the young prostitute Abby, whereupon the tramp passes out and carries him to the police station. But the police work with Drake and call his other son, who scratches the tramp “scum” in the upper body. Covered in blood, the tramp rescues Abby on the street. Abby lets him sleep in her apartment for one night.

The next day the tramp earns the money for the lawn mower by being abused for a video. When he tries to buy the lawnmower, three men rob the shop. The tramp grabs a shotgun sold in the store and shoots the gangsters down. Since the shotgun costs exactly as much as the lawnmower, he buys the shotgun instead of the lawnmower and henceforth cleans the city of criminals.

The city's population becomes big fans of the tramp, which the Drake clan dislike. Drake's sons then use a flamethrower to massacre the children on a school bus to scare their parents into fighting the tramp. The population hunted down all homeless people out of fear of Drake's gang and who they believe to be homeless, and massacres them. The tramp meanwhile can save Abby from a sadistic police officer and is hidden by Abby in her apartment. However, they are watched and Drake's sons break into the apartment. While Ivan is using ice skates to torture the tramp (a common device known as skaterape in the film ), Slick slowly cuts Abby's throat with a large saw. The tramp manages to grab a toaster to block a kick and then pass electric shocks through the skates. While incapacitating one of Drake's sons, he saves Abby and emasculates her tormentor with the shotgun, causing Ivan to flee.

The tramp takes Abby to the hospital. Drake, now poorer by one son, uses his two-man elite unit, called "the Plague" - consisting of rip and grinder, on the tramp. When the tramp wants to leave the hospital, he makes a detour to see the neonatal ward. Because "the plague" kills almost all hospital workers on its way, which leads to a power outage due to the method of killing - they wrap the victim's neck and shoot the rope with a harpoon on the ceiling - the tramp realizes that Abby is in great danger is. But "the plague" has hidden in Abby's room and overwhelms the tramp when he tries to save her. "The Plague" transports the tramp to their home, where the tramp wakes up in a cell. Meanwhile, Abby takes the lost shotgun, steals the lawnmower and converts it.

As Drake is staging the killing ceremony in front of the assembled audience, Abby appears and threatens Ivan. Drake kills Ivan after one of "the plagues" declares him replaceable. One of the plagues attacks Abby and is shot and shredded by her. She prevents the vagrant from being beheaded, but is then overpowered by Drake. He sticks her hand into the lawnmower. Abby, however, uses the now pointed bone of her arm and stabs Drake. Then she frees the tramp from the torture device, who finally wants to button the Drake lying on the ground. Meanwhile, however, the police arrive and threaten to kill the tramp if he shoots Drake. The audience, armed to the teeth, disagreed and turned their guns on the chief of police. The tramp shoots Drake, the police shoots the tramp and the audience shoots the police.

criticism

Mike Hale said in the New York Times that since the director's extremely trivial story is very straightforward and not very ironic, the film will be boring and uncomfortable for most viewers, especially because of scenes like the one showing children on a bus burn alive. In contrast, Rutger Hauer's performance in depicting the hobo was praised.

Rüdiger Suchsland ( film-dienst ) described Hobo with a Shotgun as one of the discoveries at the 44th Festival de Cinema Fantastic in Sitges . It is a "tough revenge film in the tradition of the" dirty "1970s B-movies". “Rutger Hauer, original Technicolor material and splatter effects” turned out to be “an impressive combination on closer inspection”.

Stefan Jung discusses the film in the lexicon article of the Encyclopedia of Fantastic Films as a striking representative of the more recent grindhouse and exploitation films. The film lives from the recruitment of the main actor Rutger Hauer and, as a high-concept film, captivates with formal explicitness; According to Jung, the aesthetic interest of the film is particularly noticeable in the choice of image design (coloring and lighting) with a striking retro Technicolor logo in the opening credits as a “highly self-reflective formal identifier”. In Hobo with a Shotgun, "acting" becomes the top priority.

publication

The film was released by Universum Film in German video stores on October 4, 2012. Since a cut version did not receive FSK approval either, it was decided to only publish the unabridged version, which was given the seal of "criminally harmless" by the SPIO's legal commission . The film went on sale a day later.

The Federal Inspectorate contradicted the opinion of the SPIO / JK by determining that the indexing on December 31, 2012 was relevant under criminal law and thus indexed the film on List B.

In May 2014 the confiscation order was published, which prohibits the distribution of the film in Germany.
