As Castle Melanger a former Hofgut the men is of Marktredwitz in the local situation of the market Küps in Upper Franconian district of Kronach in Bavaria called.

Geographical location

The market town of Küps is located in the middle of the extensive valley landscape of the central Rodach . Slavs immigrated from the east are considered to be the founders of the settlement on the mountainside on the left bank of the Rodach . Prehistoric finds also point to an earlier settlement of the area by Celts . The favorable location of the place on the Rodach, which served as a transport route in the Middle Ages , established the establishment of four aristocratic seats .

So in 1151 the beginnings of the Old or Middle Castle were built , around 1400 the first buildings of the New or Rear Castle , before 1521 Melanger Castle as a fortified courtyard south of the Rear Castle and finally, before 1540, the Upper Castle on the highest point of the place.

While the Hofgut Melanger was already described as abandoned in 1668, the three other aristocratic residences in the locality still exist. Six more were built in the immediate vicinity of Küps between the 13th and 18th centuries: The castles in Oberlangstadt , Hain , Schmölz , Theisenort , and the moated Tüschnitz castle and the old bower in Nagel. All are or were in today's Küps market area.

history

The Melanger estate was first notarized in 1521 for Alexander von Redwitz as a “whale at the back of the village against Kronach”, with “whale” designating a battle-tested, fortified property. From 1528 to 1592 the estate belonged to the Bamberg Monastery as a fief , and later to the Barons von Schaumberg . In 1668 Melanger had already been given up in favor of the Upper Castle and fell into disrepair.

In the area of the property, more recent research has not only produced findings from the Middle Ages but also from the early modern period, which indicates that it was at least partially used until the 18th century.

In 1811, inheritance disputes within the von Redwitz family led to the sale of the remnants of the Melanger estate, including the property.
