Hogrefe (Hogrebe, Hogreve, derivatives of the official title Greve ) is an originally Lower Saxon surname. The name was first mentioned in the form of Gogreve in Medebach in 1172 : Luithewicus Gogreve and his brother, a priest by the name of Thomas, are mentioned. The name is derived from the Low German official designation for a regular judge at a Gogericht , that of a Gogrefen or later Hogreven. The last administrative districts as Gogerichte existed in the area of ​​Lower Saxony around 1600.
