The Holzhausenpark is 3.5 hectares large remainder of the former estate Holzhausen Oed of patrician family Holzhausen in Frankfurt .

history

The Holzhausen Oed originally consisted of an almost 30 hectare estate , the central building of which was probably originally a medieval moated castle . The earliest known pictorial representation of Holzhausen Oed can be found on the map of the siege of Frankfurt during the uprising of Protestant princes around Moritz von Sachsen in 1552, made by Conrad Faber von Kreuznach . From 1727 to 1729 the moated castle in the castle pond , which was destroyed during the siege and then rebuilt, was replaced by the little wooden house .

During the founding period , large parts of the green area at Holzhausen Oed were built over. The current site is therefore only about an eighth of its original size. This reduction in size of the property can be recognized to the present day by the location of the preserved wrought-iron gate from the end of the 18th century in the Louis-Seize style. This gate is a remnant of the former enclosure of the Holzhausen Oed am Oeder Weg , over 200 meters away from the castle. From the gate, an avenue with chestnut trees dating from around 1910 leads to the castle. During this time the park was laid out as an English landscape garden in its present form. The castle pond surrounding the castle was reduced to 0.2 hectares.

The last owner of Holzhausen Oed , Rittmeister Adolph von Holzhausen († 1923), donated the park and palace to the city of Frankfurt as the last male member of his family. In 1912 and 1913 the Holzhausenpark was converted into a public park and then made accessible to the public. Today the park is an important recreational area for the Frankfurt districts Nordend and Westend . He was slightly enlarged a few years ago by a section of the Hammannstraße deconsecrated and the park was sold.
