Home is a film by the Swiss film director Ursula Meier from 2008 .
action
A family of five has lived in a single house right next to a half-finished motorway for years . The carriageway, which has not been further developed for ten years, is used as a living space and play area, life is happy and carefree.
One day, however, the line is surprisingly completed and opened to traffic. The strange idyll comes to an abrupt end.
At first the family members, whose route into the city is now blocked by the motorway, try to come to terms with the new situation in different ways, which they initially find amusing, but gradually they are driven to despair by the side effects of the traffic. The mother hardly gets any sleep. The scientifically-minded Marion noticed a high level of lead in the food that she grew herself. The grown-up Judith, until then looking rather indifferent, disappears one day.
When the father makes the spontaneous decision to leave the house immediately, his wife refuses: this is her home, she has nowhere to start again. They stay. As Marion predicted as a result of the lead exposure, people are becoming more and more aggressive towards one another. Even ten-year-old Julien, whom everyone actually likes, is no longer able to mediate between the very different characters.
Finally, the father bricked up the windows and doors and insulated all the outer walls with glass wool, after which it was quiet, but the resulting fortress, in which the family now lived without any contact with the outside world, was unable to get fresh air or light. As a result, people become more and more lazy and increasingly prone to completely unreasonable behavior. Apartments and residents go into neglect, social interaction is reduced to a minimum.
When Judith returns one day but cannot find a way into the house and leaves, the mother wakes up from a long sleep. With the last of her strength, she tears down the wall of the front door, whereupon the family members leave the house in their sleeping clothes like unexpectedly released prisoners without taking anything with them.
production
Ursula Meier spent almost a year looking for a suitable location for the shooting. Even Canada was looking for an abandoned highway. Meier found what he was looking for in Bulgaria . The house, in and on which almost all scenes of the film were shot, was rebuilt on the former country road, which for a time served as a runway for irrigation planes. The road was also re-paved, which is also part of some movie scenes. The up to 300 drivers who were needed for the rapid drives by at speeds of up to 120 km / h were residents of a nearby town. " The drivers were very happy. They didn't know a cinema before, " said the director. On the days when there was no shooting, the Bulgarians came by with their entire families and toured the location. Filming took ten weeks. The film cost five million euros.
The premiere took place in France on May 18, 2008 at the Cannes Film Festival . The film opened in cinemas in Switzerland on October 15, 2008, in France on October 29, 2008, in Belgium on November 12, 2008 and in Germany on June 25, 2009.
Reviews
" Jacques Tati would have been fascinated by the originality of this fable ..."
“The atmosphere, which the film leads to its climax with merciless consistency, becomes increasingly oppressive. Liberation cuts the home to pieces. Welcome to reality."
“Home” is a bizarre mixture of grotesque comedy and drama, of thriller, eco, catastrophe, horror and science fiction film. Above all, however, it is a film about the authority of the family - as a cell resisting the outside world, but also imploding as a destructive apparatus directed against itself. "
