Homosexuality in Gabon is taboo in society and was initially declared illegal in June 2019. However, this legislation was revised in June 2020.

From 2000 to 2019, homosexual acts were legal in Gabon . The age of consent was uniformly 18 years. In June 2019, largely unnoticed by the global public, a law was passed that threatens homosexual acts with a prison sentence of up to 6 months. In June 2020, a first step was taken in the country’s lower house to repeal this law. On June 29, 2020, the Senate of Gabon also approved the legalization of sexual acts among men and women. President Ali-Ben Bongo Ondimba signed the law on July 7, 2020.

Anti-discrimination laws

There is no anti-discrimination law in Gabon. In December 2008 Gabon was one of the few African countries to sign the UN Declaration on the Protection of Sexual Orientation .

Recognition of same-sex couples

State recognition of same-sex couples does not exist in the form of same-sex marriage or in a registered partnership .
