Homosexuality in Namibia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Geographical location of Namibia

In Namibia , the sexual orientation , including homosexuality , of people in work and employment is legally protected by a general prohibition of discrimination under the Namibian constitution .

Homosexual acts are no longer prosecuted in Namibia , provided they take place in a private environment. Same-sex couples are not recognized by way of registered partnership or same-sex marriage . A precedent in this context has preoccupied the Namibian courts since the end of 2017.

Social situation

In Namibia homosexuality is still taboo in parts of society, but in recent years (as of 2017) the public has heard more. Public parades of gays and lesbians are now accepted. In November 2016, the Dutch Reformed Church called for equal treatment for homosexuals.

There is only a small number of homosexual communities in the capital Windhoek and other places. There are LGBT organizations such as Rainbow Project operates. The first major events with more than 500 participants took place in Windhoek in July 2005. In 2009 the first demonstration for the rights of homosexual people took place in Keetmanshoop in Namibia .
