Hoppípolla ( isl. Correct: Hopp í Polla , de something like this: "In puddles jump" ) is a song of the Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós , that on 28 November 2005 as the lead single for her album Takk ... was published .

In addition to the song Hoppípolla, the single contains the pieces Með blóðnasir - an instrumental coda for the song, also to be heard on Takk ... - and a newly recorded version of the song Hafssól from the debut album Von .

The single rose to number 24 in the UK singles charts in May 2006 . British DJ Chicane released an instrumental cover version in July 2009 under the title Poppiholla , which reached a top ten position in the British charts.

The text of the song is mostly written in Icelandic , but also contains phrases from the fantasy language Vonlenska (in German: Land of Hope ) invented by the singer Jón Þór Birgisson .

Music video

In November 2005, a promotional music video produced by Arni & Kinski was released. In this, the elderly stroll through the streets in the suburbs of the Icelandic capital Reykjavík and act like children. They play pranks on local residents , throw water balloons at each other, and fight with wooden swords near a cemetery . As an older man in the fighting nosebleed suffered by a group flees in fear, while others celebrate their victory. The video also shows various friends jumping into puddles.

The band's musicians also have roles in the music video: keyboardist Kjartan Sveinsson falls victim to a bell stroke , singer Jón Þór Birgisson plays a cashier who is robbed by an older man, drummer Orri Páll Dýrason fixes his bike and bassist Georg Hólm cleans it shown.

Cover version Poppiholla

On July 13, 2009 the British DJ Chicane released an instrumental cover version of the song under the title Poppiholla . The song peaked at number 7 on the UK singles chart and stayed in the top ten of the leaderboard for three weeks.

Sky Sports used the song in the UK to cover the Guinness Premiership in the 2009-10 season . The English football club Dagenham & Redbridge from the London borough of Dagenham uses the piece as invasion music at their home games.

Use in film and television

The song was used by the BBC in commercials for its Planet Earth series that year, bringing the band to a large audience for the first time. This led to the single being reprinted via EMI Records and becoming very successful. The song was also used as background music in various shows on the station in the same year.

The song was also used in commercials for Children of Men and Slumdog Millionaire , appeared in the soundtracks of Penelope and We're Buying a Zoo , and was featured in commercials for Thomson Reuters , Oxfam and Viasat .
