publication
Von was released in Iceland in 1997 on the Smekkleysa label ; however, only under 500 copies were sold. In 2004 it was re-released for the worldwide market after the band had become more popular through the follow-up albums Ágætis byrjun and () . Von , like Ágætis byrjun , has now achieved platinum status in Iceland.
The recordings of Von took a long time; Nevertheless, the band was not particularly satisfied with the result and wanted to record the songs again. However, due to time constraints, it was ultimately decided against it. A year after the release of Von , a remix album called Von Brigði was released , which can be translated with disappointment ( Vonbrigði ) as well as with variations of Von ( Von Brigði ). In addition to the remixes, it contains a song called leit af lífi , which should have been released on Von, but was not finished at the time of publication.
The title of the first regular album after Von , Ágætis byrjun (“A pretty good start”) also suggests that the band was n't particularly satisfied with Von .
Reviews
When it was re-released in 2004, Von received mostly positive reviews. Allmusic gave the album three and a half out of five and Pitchfork Media gave it 7.8 out of 10 points.
Individual evidence
- ↑ The literal translation of Sigur Rós is something like "Rose of victory". In addition, Sigurrós (without spaces) is also a common female given name in Iceland. The band was named after the sister of singer Jón Þór Birgisson , who bears this name. → cf. also FAQ on the band website .
