Horace Mann junior

Horace Mann junior (born February 25, 1844 in Boston , † November 11, 1868 ) was an American botanist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " H.Mann ".

Life

Horace Mann junior was the son of the educational reformer Horace Mann (1796-1859). During his studies at the Lawrence Scientific School he attended zoology lectures with Louis Agassiz and botany courses with Asa Gray . In 1864 he went on botanical expeditions to the Hawaiian Islands with William Tufts Brigham , where they discovered over 100 new plant taxa. These included the genera Platydesma and Alsinidendron . After returning to the Lawrence Scientific School, Mann wrote his doctoral thesis on Hawaiian flora with the title " Enumeratio of Hawaiian Plants, " which was published in 1867. In 1868 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Asa Gray wanted Horace Mann junior to succeed him in the Botanical Gardens and in the Department of Botany at Harvard University . Before Mann could take office, he died of tuberculosis on November 11, 1868 at the age of 24 .

In addition to “ Enumeratio of Hawaiian Plants ”, Mann wrote the manuscripts for other works on Hawaiian flora, including “ Flora of the Hawaiian Islands ” or “ Analysis of the Hawaiian Flora ”, which were finished by William Tufts Brigham and published after Mann's death.

Dedication names

William Tufts Brigham named Cyanea mannii , Wilhelm Hillebrand Huperzia mannii and Cryptocarya mannii , William Munro Poa mannii and Daniel Cady Eaton named the fern Diellia mannii in honor of Horace Mann junior.
