William Tufts Brigham

William Tufts Brigham (born May 24, 1841 in Boston , Massachusetts , † January 30, 1926 in Honolulu ) was an American geologist , botanist , ethnologist and museum director. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Brigham ".

Life

Brigham's father, William Brigham, was a lawyer in Boston. After attending the Boston Latin School , Brigham graduated from Harvard University with a law degree and graduated with a master's degree in 1862 . In 1864 he studied botany and from 1864 to 1865 he accompanied the botanist Horace Mann junior on botanical excursions to the Hawaiian islands. In 1867 he was a barrister admitted. In 1892 he became the first curator of the Bernice P. Bishop Museum in Honolulu, and from 1898 until his retirement in 1918 he was the first director of the museum.

Brigham was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1869), the California Academy of Sciences, and the Philadelphia Academy of Natural Sciences .

Taxa named after Brigham

Horace Mann junior named Gardenia brighamii and Asa Gray named the genus Brighamia in honor of William Tufts Brigham.
