Horacio Verbitsky

Verbitsky

Horacio Verbitsky (born February 11, 1942 in Buenos Aires ) is an Argentine journalist and book author. He heads the Centro de Estudios Legales y Sociales ("Center for Legal and Social Studies"; CELS), an Argentine human rights organization founded in 1979 .

Life

Verbitsky was a member of the left-wing Peronist organization Montoneros in the 1970s . He was best known in the 1990s for articles exposing corruption and scandals by members of Carlos Menem's government and causing some ministers to resign. In 1994 he published the confessions of a naval officer, which exposed the torture and murders of the Argentine Navy of opposition members. In doing so, he brought about increased prosecution of mass murders and human rights violations by the Argentine military dictatorship , which ruled from 1976 to 1983 and had up to 30,000 Argentines kidnapped and murdered (see Dirty War ).

Since 2004 Verbitsky has supported the government of Néstor Kirchner and his wife and successor Cristina Fernández de Kirchner on many points as an employee of the newspaper Página / 12 . Because he should not have criticized corruption allegations against the Kirchner governments as much as those of their previous government, he had a dispute with the journalist Julio Nudler .

His book El silencio: de Paulo VI a Bergoglio: las relaciones secretas de la Iglesia con la ESMA (published in 2005) deals with the relationship of the Catholic Church in Argentina to the military dictatorship. Verbitsky accused Jorge Mario Bergoglio ( Pope Francis since 2013 ) of having in 1976, as the head of the Jesuits in Argentina at the time, extradited some of the priests who were subordinate to him to the junta and did not campaign for their release. The book was published shortly before the 2005 conclave , when Bergoglio, who had been a cardinal since 2001, ran for the papal office for the first time . Verbitsky reiterated and reiterated his allegations against Bergoglio in March 2013 when he was elected as the new Pope. He is considered the main critic of the new pope.
