The Horch 850 was a car of the luxury class with eight-cylinder - inline engine , which the for Auto Union owned German brand Horch in 1935 as the successor of the type 500 B ( Horch 8 brought out). In the Zwickau Horch factory, around 2200 vehicles of all variants were built until the war-related discontinuation of the 850 successor Horch 951 A in 1940.
Model history
The vehicles had a 5-liter eight-cylinder in- line engine with a vertical shaft drive for the overhead camshaft at the front, which developed 100 hp and powered the rear wheels via a four-speed gearbox with a gearshift lever in the middle of the vehicle . An additional " overdrive " gearbox was available on request , which was activated with an additional gear lever. The chassis with a 3.75 m wheelbase corresponded to a large extent to the previous model Horch 500 B, but the ladder frame with crossbar was no longer made of open U-profiles, but stiffer box profiles, which weighed 100 kg more. The wheel suspensions now consisted of two transverse leaf springs at the front, while the rigid axle with Underslung half- springs from the predecessor was used at the rear . All versions had drum brakes with hydraulic actuation ("oil pressure brake") and Bosch Dewandre suction air assistance ( servo brake ). The fuel tank in the rear had a capacity of 95 liters, which with an average consumption of 22 l / 100 km provided a range of over 400 km. The internal version called Horch 851 had, among other things, additional interior equipment with a retractable partition to the driver, double bumpers and larger tires.
In addition, until the end of 1936, the factory-internal Type 853, the two-door convertible Horch 850 Sport, with 25 cm less wheelbase (3.5 m) and a rear "double joint axle" ( De-Dion axle ) instead of the rigid axle, was part of the range. The Pullman - sedans and sports convertibles made even the Horch body while glasses in Dresden the four-door Pullman convertible cars built on the information provided from Zwickau chassis. Special bodies from other manufacturers were also available on request.
With a modified camshaft and the compression ratio increased from 5.8 to 6.1: 1 , the engine output rose to 120 hp in 1937. The special bodies were omitted. Also in 1937, the successor to the Type 851, the Horch 951 with a 9 cm longer body (5.64 m) was presented. The car with perforated disks or wire spoke wheels now also had the De-Dion (“double joint”) rear axle of the type 853. In the same year, the Horch 951 A followed with standard overdrive, which was now referred to as the Autobahn - “Ferngang”. The 951 A, which was built until 1940, was also available as a four-door convertible and a six-seater touring car .
The sports convertible now officially known as the Horch 853 also received the more powerful 120 hp engine in 1937. The model had 5 cm less wheelbase (3.45 m) than its predecessor, the 850 Sport. The successor Horch 853 A with standard motorway "long distance gear" came in the same year.
As a special version of the 853 A Roadster, the Horch 855 appeared in 1938 with a chassis shortened to 3.3 m. Due to the war, production of all sports convertibles and roadsters was stopped in 1939.
The Pullman models with long wheelbase (850/851, 951/951 A) were built around 1200 times, the sports convertibles (850 Sport, 853/853 A) around 1000 times. Horch produced three copies of the short special roadster Horch 855; according to other information seven.
An estimated 10 to 15 percent of all 853/853 A chassis received custom-made special bodies. In 1937 Erdmann & Rossi built a private car based on the Horch 853 for racing driver Bernd Rosemeyer , who called this two-seater coupé “Manuela”.
