12 year old Admassu Amare - "Messi" as he calls himself - has a big dream. He would like to travel to Europe to attend a football school and become a star. When the Swiss Franz Arnold (Stefan Gubser), the successful and busy CEO of a very rich football company, comes to Admassu's hometown Addis Ababa as part of a campaign, Admassu sees his chance. He wants to prove his footballing skills to him and show that he has the potential to be successful in Europe.

With the help of some young people he manages to outsmart "Mr. Franz". The group plans to kidnap and extort him, but the situation becomes more serious than planned. Arnold just manages to escape into a pickup truck that Admassu also gets into. Arnold then loses consciousness. After a long drive into the wasteland, Admassu pretends to have saved Arnold. He asks him to be brought to Europe where he can make his dream come true. In return, he offers Franz to take him back to the city - to civilization.

Origin and background

In 2011 Stefan Jäger was invited to teach at the Blue Nile Film and Television Academy in Addis Ababa. This film school established by Abraham Haile is the only one in Ethiopia. Despite their education, it is very difficult for many film students to get a job after they graduate. Jäger and Haile therefore came up with the idea of ​​producing a film with the entire film school.

Horizon Beautiful was filmed in Addis Ababa in April and May 2012. The main actor, Henok Tadele, was a 12-year-old street boy whose life has changed drastically throughout the production. As a homeless orphan boy, he was able to integrate himself into society and go to school again after the shooting ended. Tadele also created the last song in the film. So he came a little closer to his dream of becoming a professional singer.
