Horst Afheldt

Horst Afheldt (born October 10, 1924 - † March 7, 2016 ) was a German political scientist and publicist.

Career

Afheldt first studied physics and law in Hamburg. After working for the NDR , he was managing director of the Association of German Scientists from 1960 to 1970 . From 1970 to 1980 he was head of the security policy working group at the Max Planck Institute for research into the living conditions of the scientific and technical world in Starnberg and, after completing his political science doctorate on the analysis of security policy (1972), carried out projects on basic peace policy, ecological and economic issues .

One of Afheldt's main research areas was peace policy in view of the arms race in the “Cold War” . The physicist and philosopher Michael Drieschner stated in his report on the peace work of Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker and Jürgen Habermas at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Living Conditions in the Scientific and Technical World that

“[…] Afheldt had become one of the few real experts in the field in decades of work and at the same time, in his unconventional and creative way of thinking, especially in cooperation with Weizsäcker, developed new and really convincing ideas that even military experts in the whole western world did not understand could just pass. "

Afheldt became known to the wider public primarily through his non-fiction books on the subject of the welfare state and security and peace policy.

Afheldt working group in the Max Planck Society

The Afheldt working group in the Max Planck Society was set up with its headquarters in Starnberg after the MPI was dissolved to research the living conditions of the scientific and technical world . She mainly worked on the "Stability-Oriented Security Policy" project, which was carried out in collaboration with the physicist Hans-Peter Dürr (Director at the Max Planck Institute for Physics and Astrophysics) and with the Bundeswehr University in Neubiberg and the research department of the MBB company has been. The project was also funded by the German Research Foundation. In addition to Afheldt, the working group had three employees and one scholarship holder. In 1988 the working group was established by General a. D. Gerd Schmückle added. The working group was closed on September 30, 1989 when Afheldt retired; most recently, apart from Afheldt, it consisted of four employees and four third-party employees. The "Stability-Oriented Security Policy" project was headed by Albrecht von Müller .
