Horst Becking

Horst Becking (born January 14, 1937 in Hagen ) is a German painter .

Career

Becking received his first basic artistic training between 1954 and 1957 at the technical colleges in Dortmund and Wuppertal .

Since 1959 he has taken part in group exhibitions with his works, has also had his first solo exhibitions and has increasingly committed to the “small format”. His first etchings also date from this period.

Becking became a member of the West German Artists Association in 1964 . From 1971 to 1977 he studied at the Staatliche Kunstakademie Düsseldorf , first in the class of Joseph Beuys , after his departure with Rupprecht Geiger . He completed his studies as a master class student , and his work increasingly showed a higher degree of abstraction .

A long trip through the USA and Canada in 1978 resulted in a release from the clasps of miniature format, he made his first large-format gouaches and oil paintings.

In 1979 the first of his 10 artist books to date was published, supplemented by a total of 12 portfolio works with etchings .

Since 1980 Becking has been teaching, in addition to his free artistic work, in teacher training and art education in and outside of school. From 1980 to 1983 he moved into a studio in Brussels and sent exhibitions in the Benelux countries and France. In 1981 he stayed in Italy for a long time (Tuscany and Florence) and began to use old papers (letters, notes, documents) as design elements. He also painted his first oil paintings on used morbid canvases ( Baschen ).

In 1985 Becking stayed in New York and sent an exhibition there, the cycle "Summer Days" was created. Afterwards (1986–1987) the artist stayed in Veneto and Venice, “The Light” dominated his pictures more and more. 1989 discovery of “blue” on Crete , in 1991 the book “Paris - a side by side of opposites” was created, in 1992 Becking worked in the Atelier Lacourière Frélaut in Paris , in the following year various portfolios emerged, including “The trees wait motionless”.

During a renewed stay in Venice in 1994 his “Venezia” pictures were taken there. In the following year the Bonhoeffer cycle “Past” was created and Becking's works can be seen at numerous exhibitions in Germany and abroad, but he lived and worked mainly in his hometown of Hagen.

In 1997 Becking received the International Triennial Prize for Original Graphics in Grenchen (Switzerland), and a catalog of his works was published on his 60th birthday. During a renewed stay in Venice and on Lake Maggiore , further "Venezia" pictures and large-format "blue" pictures were taken.

In 1999 his book Traces of the Wind was published . In 2000 the first sculptures were created and Becking designed the church windows in the Gnadenkirche Hagen-Holthausen . In the following year 2001 his monograph Light from the Stone of the Mountain was published .
