Horst Dohm

Horst Dohm OBE (born June 18, 1930 in Berlin ; † October 25, 1998 in Berlin) was a German state politician for the CDU in Berlin . He was the district mayor of Berlin-Wilmersdorf .

Life

After studying German , he worked as an industrial clerk and teacher. He was the head of the youth hostel Dr. Schreber in Berlin-Marienfelde and a political educational institution near Hamburg, later director of the "Stiftung Deutschlandhaus". In 1963 he joined the CDU. From 1979 to 1981 he was the district councilor for public education in the Wilmersdorf district and from 1981 to 1996 district mayor of Wilmersdorf. As a reaction to the entry of the Republicans into the Berlin district parliaments, he launched the 'Festival of Nations' in 1986, a celebration of international understanding and the peaceful coexistence of many nations in one district. It was initially celebrated in the courtyard of the Wilmersdorf town hall and then on Olivaer Platz and, since 1994, on Prager Platz .

After retiring from the mayor's office, in May 1996 he became President of the German Life Saving Society , State Association of Berlin. He was state chairman of the senior citizens' union of the CDU Berlin. His height of 1.94 meters and his gray hair had earned Horst Dohm the nickname "silver poplar". With a term of office of 15 years, he was one of the longest serving mayors in Berlin. The portraits of a number of Wilmersdorf mayors and district mayors hang in the vestibule of the BVV hall in the former Wilmersdorf Town Hall.

Honors

  • He was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his collaboration with the British Allies .
  • Dohm received the Wilmersdorf Citizens' Medal.
  • In October 2000 the Wilmersdorf ice rink was named after him and has been called the Horst-Dohm-Eisstadion since then .

Personal

Dohm was married and had a daughter. He died of lung cancer on October 25, 1998. His grave is in the Wilmersdorf cemetery at Berliner Straße 81-103.
