Athletic career

After the company sports association (BSG) Lokomotive Halle in 1950 could neither qualify for the new second-rate GDR league nor for the state league, their striker Horst Ebert switched to local rivals and upper division BSG Turbine Halle at the beginning of the 1950/51 season. The Eastern Zone Master from 1949 had only achieved a disappointing fifth place in the first season of the German Sports Committee's major league in 1949/50 . Even with the participation of Horst Ebert, there was no improvement in the 1950/51 season; Turbine only finished sixth out of 18 teams. For the 1951/52 season, Turbine Halle was considered a championship contender due to its excellent midfield row. In the season that ran over 36 rounds, the people of Halle were able to meet expectations and, after 21 wins with only four defeats, were sovereign champions. Horst Ebert, who played all the point games and counted among the most dangerous attackers with nine hits, was one of the assets. He was usually used as a right winger. In addition to the point games, Ebert completed a game with the state selection of Saxony-Anhalt .

In the following season 1952/53 Turbine experienced a nasty crash. Although playing with an almost unchanged squad, the Halle team narrowly escaped relegation from the league, in which they were only 13th among 17 teams at the end of the season. When the disappointment about the suppression of the popular uprising of June 17, 1953 was added in the summer , numerous players left the team for West Germany. The 24-year-old Horst Ebert was one of the four players who joined the North German league club Werder Bremen. He stayed with Werder until 1957 and achieved the best result with third place in the Oberliga Nord in the 1954/55 season. For the 1957/58 season, Ebert moved to league rivals VfL Wolfsburg. Here he was able to reach eleventh place in his first season, a year later the Wolfsburg were relegated to the amateur league. As a result, Horst Ebert ended his nine-year career as a high-performance soccer player at the age of 30.
