life and work

Horst Jandl saw the light of day as the third of four children of August Jandl, a master plumber from Ohlsdorf. At that time, his father was working as a skilled worker in Stuttgart . In 1941 the family moved with the father to Wreschen in Poland. In January 1945, shortly before the end of the war , the family had to flee. The escape led to St. Wolfgang in Upper Austria, where August Jandl's mother lived there. Shortly afterwards, the father leased the Hütter plumber, glazing and plumbing company in Altaussee , which brought the Jandl family to the Ausseerland.

Horst K. Jandl himself received training in painting at the Glass School in Kramsach / Tyrol and in the master class for glass restoration painting at the Erwin Stein State Glass School in Hadamar with Erhard Theodor Astler and Ludwig Wollenheit . From 1962 he started working as a freelance artist. As a member of the artists' association Internationaler Bodensee Club (IBC) in Überlingen , he took part in several solo and group exhibitions.

In 1966 he returned to Bad Aussee , where he took part in his brother Johann Jandl's glazing business and the business was expanded to include artistic design. He created church windows, monuments, glass walls and carried out restorations using different techniques. Among other things, the glass windows of the rectory chapel and the parish church of Kumitz near Bad Mitterndorf come from him .

The Villa Königsgarten, in Fischerndorf 59 in Altaussee.

Towards the end of the 1970s, glass work slowly faded into the background, he concentrated on painting and left his brother's business that he had been running with up to then. Sketches and watercolors of motifs from the Ausseerland were replaced by partly large-format oil paintings. He finds his motifs in the landscape of the Styrian Salzkammergut. Despite his preference for idyllic motifs, his pictures are far from loveliness. Jandl's exhibition activity was limited to the Ausseerland. He supported the design of the literature museum in Altaussee. His residence and studio, the Villa Königsgarten in Altaussee , is part of the local Via Artis hiking trail and is used as a backdrop for documentaries and by filmmakers. Friedrich Torberg once resided here when he wrote his collection of anecdotes, Die Tante Jolesch .

Horst Jandl has made a contribution to the artistic legacy of the Aussee painter Hugo Cordignano . He is a member of the Salzburg Art Association and the professional association of Austrian visual artists . His daughter Karen Kuttner Jandl (* 1970) is also an artist.
