In his professional life, Leukefeld later worked for many years as a city planner in Hanover and for the last twelve years he took care of, among other things, improving the living environment in the Hanover district of Vahrenheide , where he also lived himself. Before Leukefeld end of July 1998 in the retirement went, he proposed the establishment of a play and sculptures - axis to along the pedestrian and cycle link between the Weimar Avenue and Dresden Road. The aim was, among other things, to dissolve the separating impression of the underpass of the light rail with tower-like play equipment for children on both sides of the underpass . Together with the teacher and didactic headmaster Wolfgang Vogelsaenger from IGS Vahrenheide and the artist Arno Kindermann , sculptures should also be created together with students from the district. The participation in the work project, especially of pupils with learning difficulties, was new pedagogical territory at the time, as successes that can be quickly seen and experienced should strengthen the self-confidence of the pupils.
In his retirement, Horst Leukefeld devoted himself more to his own sculpture and has made a name for himself in the Lower Saxony state capital , especially with his art in public spaces .
