career

Playing in the 2nd Amateur League East in Schleswig-Holstein with the Blue-Yellows from Comet Kiel , the striker Horst Martinsen was nominated by the DFB for the international match of the German national soccer team of amateurs on May 27, 1959 in victories against England. With the attack Martinsen, Heinz Höher , Erwin Stein , Günter Herrmann and Heinz Hornig , the game was won 2-0 goals. Center forward Erwin Stein scored both goals.

Martinsen accepted the offer from Holstein Kiel for the round in 1959/60 and moved to the Oberliga Nord. The newcomer from Comet had a debut made to measure: On the starting day of the round, August 16, 1959 against Werder Bremen , he scored all four goals in the 4-1 away win on the Weser. At the end of the round, the protégés of coach Helmuth Johannsen finished ninth and Martinsen had scored 14 hits in 28 missions. He led the internal scorers list for the "storks". In the last year of the Oberliga era 1962/63, Holstein Kiel ranked fifth and Martinsen had scored 16 goals in 22 appearances. This made him the top scorer in the Holstein attack in 1962, mostly with Manfred Greif , Martinsen, Gerd Koll , Fritz Boyens and Manfred Podlich . In 1962 he was appointed to the association selection of Northern Germany.

Since Kiel was not nominated for the 1963/64 round of the new Bundesliga , Martinsen played the games in the North Regional Football League in this association round . Despite the newcomers Gerd Saborowski and Otto Hartz , KSV Holstein only made it to fifth place. With 17 games and nine goals, Horst Martinsen said goodbye to contract football in the summer of 1964 and ended his career with Holstein Kiel.

Later he held the coaching position at his home club Comet Kiel.
