Live and act

Mendelsohn began his time in Radebeul in 1960 at the Landesbühnen Sachsen with the portrayal of Raimond in Schiller's Jungfrau von Orleans , and in 1963 at the latest with Mephisto in Goethe's Urfaust he had won over the audience. Over the years countless roles have been added, including Peachum in Brecht's Threepenny Opera , Oberon in Shakespeare's Midsummer Night 's Dream , Napoleon in War and Peace and class teacher Crey in the Feuerzangenbowle .

Mendelsohn was also active on the Rathen rock stage , which is used by the state theaters . When, in the course of the Karl May renaissance in the GDR in 1984, the piece Der Schatz im Silbersee , an adventure piece adapted by Helmut Menschel based on Karl May , premiered in Rathen , Mendelsohn gave the Gray Eagle. In the Old Surehand , which premiered in Rathen in 1995, Mendelsohn was the narrator. The DEFA film Kurier der Schwarzen Jäger from 1970, in which Mendelsohn played Capitane Bellemonte, was based on a historically documented incident from the time of the Wars of Liberation in 1812/1813, which was successfully performed as a stage play in Rathen for several years. The film was also shot with the ensemble of the State Theaters of Saxony.

During the turn of 1989/1990 , Mendelsohn, together with the later artistic director Christian Schmidt and the then conductor Matthias Liebich, was ready to take on responsibility for running the theater in order to bring it through the difficult times.

He gave his farewell performance in 2000 when, after more than four decades of work as an actor, he played the role of 70 in the premiere of Michael Frayn's comedy Der nackte Wahnsinn (in the original: Noises Off from 1982) two days before his 70th birthday -year-old actor.

The actor, who lives in Radebeul, was honored in 2000 on the occasion of his 70th birthday with the award of the art prize of the major district town of Radebeul for “always putting all his strength and personality into the service of the theater” .

Mendelsohn was married to the actress Hannelore Mendelsohn and had two children. He was the nephew of the German doctor and Royal Prussian Guard officer Julius Schoeps .
