Horst Paulmann Kemna (born January 23, 1935 in Kassel , Hessen ) is a German-Chilean entrepreneur . He is the managing director of Cencosud , a retail company in South America .

biography

After the Second World War , Paulmann Kemna's father, Karl Werner Paulmann, first emigrated to Argentina in 1946 because he wanted to leave Germany as a former NSDAP member and Obersturmbannführer of the SS . From 1942 he had been the chief judge and head of the central office of the courts of the SS and the police in Kassel, responsible for cases of corruption in the SS. After Paulmann's mother and her seven children followed to Argentina in 1948, this part of the family emigrated to Chile . In 1960 the daughter, who had returned to Germany, informed the German judicial authorities upon request that her father had died in Santiago de Chile in 1958 .

At the age of 13, Paulmann worked as a telephone operator in Buenos Aires . Later he made wooden toys. After the family left Argentina, they settled in Temuco and in 1952 acquired the Las Brisas restaurant, which was later converted into a supermarket. After the death of their father, Horst and his brother Jürgen Paulmann set up several supermarkets. In 1976, the two brothers separated on business. While Jürgen Paulmann expanded the Las Brisas stores into a supermarket chain, Horst Paulmann founded the Jumbo brand supermarkets. Horst Paulmann Kemna has been with Cencosud since 1976. By 2011, 43 supermarkets had been opened in Argentina , Brazil , Peru and Colombia under his management . According to the March 2011 edition of Forbes Magazine , Paulmann Kemna is the second richest person in Chile and 75th worldwide with an estimated net worth of 10.5 billion US dollars.

Paulmann Kemna lives in Santiago, is married and has three children who are members of the board of directors of Cencosud. His brother, Rüdiger Paulmann , is the founder of Paulmann Licht GmbH , his brother Jürgen Paulmann was the founder of Sky Airline .

Gran Torre Santiago

In 2014, Paulmann's 300 meter high Gran Torre Santiago building was completed and opened in the central Providencia district of Santiago. Since 2015, visitors have been able to visit the Sky Costanera viewing platform. The building planned by the architect César Pelli and the Chilean firm Alemparte, Barreda y Asociados is part of the Costanera Center complex .

criticism

Paulmann Kemna is under criticism for alleged connections to the German sect settlement and torture site Colonia Dignidad . He is also said to have been an admirer of the Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet . An event planned for the Kassel Lions Club in February 2012 , at which Paulmann Kemna was to give a guest speech, was canceled at short notice due to numerous protests against Paulmann Kemna.
