Horst Schwebel

Horst Schwebel (born November 23, 1940 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a professor emeritus for practical theology and author of several works on the interface between art and theology, church building and the “ iconography of religions”.

Career

Schwebel studied philosophy , theology and Christian archeology at the universities of Frankfurt and Marburg. His doctoral thesis from 1966 was on the phenomenological and theological investigation of abstract painting . He completed his habilitation in 1977 with a thesis on The Christ Image in Contemporary Fine Art .

From 1980 to 2006 he was a professor at the University of Marburg and director of the Institute for Church Building and Church Art of the Present , a research facility of the Evangelical Church in Germany . In 1997 he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Helsinki .

Schwebel curated exhibitions a. a. in the context of the documenta and among other things publishes the series Theologie und Ästhetik in LIT-Verlag Münster. As director of the institute, he was also the “Protestant publisher” of the ecumenical journal Kirche + Kunst . Since 2007 he has been co-editor of Tà katoptrizómena , an internet magazine for art, culture, theology and aesthetics.

Schwebel is married to Gerlinde Schwebel, a member of the FDP for many years, and lives in Marburg. In the state elections in Hesse in 1983 , he ran for the FDP in the constituency of Marburg-Biedenkopf I and received 5.8% of the vote. He heads the Religious Community Commission of the Hessian FDP.
