The St. Christoph am Arlberg Hospice is a building complex in St. Christoph am Arlberg in the municipality of St. Anton am Arlberg in Tyrol .

history

The hospice , built in the 14th century, is said to have been built by a swineherd named Heinrich, a foundling from Kempten in the Allgäu . According to legend, Heinrich is said to have worked at Arlen Castle near Nasserein (today a district of Sankt Anton am Arlberg). Since people repeatedly had fatal accidents on their way through the Arlberg, he began to collect donations for the construction of a refuge . Duke Leopold III. Austria is said to have donated a piece of land on the Arlbergpasshöhe, where Heinrich and his assistants built the hostel in 1386, which for a long time was the only facility that offered travelers protection from the freak weather. In order to maintain the facility permanently, Heinrich founded the St. Christoph Brotherhood . The members, who grew in number over time, collected donations not only in their own country, but also in France, Italy, Poland and Switzerland. Pope Boniface IX finally allowed the building of a chapel in 1397.

Since then, the Christophorus Chapel has been connected to the hospice : built by Heinrich Findelkind , consecrated in 1398, 1644 and renovated at the end of the 19th century.

A trip across the Arlberg - probably including a visit to the hospice - inspired Franziska von Hoffnaaß to write the libretto for the oratorio Christoforus , which was then set to music by her husband Josef Rheinberger and premiered in 1882.

With the construction of the Arlberg tunnel in 1884, the hospice lost its importance, as only a few travelers chose the arduous route over the mountain. The hostel gradually fell into disrepair, but was eventually placed under a preservation order. It was only with the advent of skiing from 1900 onwards that the hospice - and with it Sankt Christoph - became particularly important again. On January 3, 1901, the Arlberg Ski Club was founded in the hospice .

In 1955 Arnold Ganahl bought the building, which was still known as the Gasthof Hospiz at the time, and completely restored it. At the beginning of 1957 the building complex burned down for unknown reasons; the chapel was also destroyed. The owner Ganahl initially arranged for the hospice to be rebuilt, and at Christmas 1959 it was reopened as a hotel. The chapel was rebuilt from 1959, as this was a condition for the re-establishment of the brotherhood, which was initiated by Ganahl, Stefan Kruckenhauser and Chaplain Richard Robin. In 1962 the chapel could be inaugurated again. The chapel is represented by a figure of St. Christophorus adorned by Josef Rifesser from 1909. There are also frescoes by Fred Hochschwarzer from 1962 and glass paintings by Martin Häusle from 1962.
