The Hotel-Restaurant Erbprinz is a hotel in Ettlingen . The older part of the house facing the street, which today houses a wine tavern, is classified as defining the cityscape.

history

18th century

In 1788, Ignatz Stein , the then Ettlinger post office owner , was awarded the “Schildwirtschafts-Gerechtigkeit” for life for his post office , which he later called “Hereditary Prince”, and then in 1794 “Eternal Shield Justice” . This meant that the hostel was no longer only open to postal travelers, but to everyone. Stein was not able to run the house economically for long, however, and he sold it to the Ettlingen master brewer Krumb in 1798.

19th century

At the end of the 19th century, the “Hereditary Prince” changed owners and tenants frequently. In 1878 Eduard Williard became the owner and landlord, after his death the property passed to his wife Amanda Williard. From 1886 onwards, she leased the restaurant in brief changes to various tenants and finally sold it to the Sulzer couple in 1892. Adam Sulzer introduced art and culture to the “Erbprinz”, which attracted additional guests such as clubs, theater groups and artists. After the death of his wife, he sold the inn to the Huttenkreuz brewery in Ettlingen. The brewery renovated the inn from the ground up and kept trying to liven up the business through events. For example, a carnival ball was organized for the first time in 1903 , which became known regionally in the years that followed under the name "Rattenball".

20th century

From 1912 the married couple Jacob and Julie Gietz took over the inn. During the First World War , Jacob Gietz was entrusted with the management of the kitchen of the reserve hospital and thus the daily catering for over 2,000 wounded, while his wife took over the kitchen of the "Hereditary Prince". After Jacob Gietz's death, his son Helmuth Gietz began modernizing the house in 1934.

The hotel was not damaged by World War II . From 1945 to mid-1946, the "Hereditary Prince" was confiscated by the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration . During this time, the future American President "Ike" Eisenhower visited the restaurant for lunch. In 1946 the hotel-restaurant was reopened.

After 1948 the "Hereditary Prince" enjoyed increasing popularity. The "Hereditary Prince" counted almost all of the Chancellors and Federal Presidents among his guests, as well as members of the European nobility such as King Paul of Greece and Philip Mountbatten, Duke of Edinburgh , as well as stars such as Maria Callas and Sophia Loren .

In 1967, the Erbprinz restaurant under chef Günther Wanka was one of the first hotels in Germany to receive a star in the Michelin Guide , and from 1974 to 1978 under Günther Wanka even a second. By 1990 the restaurant received another star. In the great times of the 1960s and 1970s, many later well-known chefs worked in the Erbprinz, for example Lothar Eiermann , Hans Haas , Marc Haeberlin , Alfred Klink , Jörg Sackmann and Eckart Witzigmann .

Helmuth and his wife Annemarie Gietz handed over the management of the hotel to Uschi and Lutz Werner in 1986 and to Claire and Dieter Marschall in 1994. In 1999 Annemarie Gietz sold the hotel to the hoteliers Bernhard Zepf and René Gessler, who have been running it ever since.

21st century

In 2004, after the completion of a new hotel building, the hotel was classified as a 5-star hotel by the German Hotel and Restaurant Association .

In 2005 the restaurant was awarded a Michelin star under head chef Frank Oehler , which was no longer awarded in 2006. Since 2012, the Erbprinz restaurant has been awarded a Michelin star again under Ralph Knebel .

The hotel has around 120 hotel rooms, a wellness area and four conference rooms.
