Howard C. Hickman
Howard C. Hickman (born February 9, 1880 in Columbia , Missouri , † December 31, 1949 in San Anselmo , California ) was an American actor , director and screenwriter .
Life
A native of Missouri, Howard C. Hickman began his acting career in the theater. After he had some success there, he got into the fledgling film business through contacts with the film pioneer Thomas Harper Ince , where he quickly got leading roles. In the anti-war film Civilization (1916), a historically significant production directed by Harper Ince, Hickman played the leading role of Count Ferdinand . Parallel to his acting career, Hickman worked between 1915 and 1921 as a director of a total of 19 films, two of which he also wrote the screenplay. In the early 1920s, Hickman and his wife, actress Bessie Barriscale - with whom he also played in a number of films - withdrew from the film business for the time being and started working again as a theater actor. He remained married to Barriscale until his death and they had a son.
It was not until 1928 that Hickman played film roles again, although he did not get beyond small to medium supporting roles in the later course of his film career. As a character actor he embodied mostly dignified governors, doctors, businessmen or lawyers. Hickman is best known today for his brief appearance as plantation owner John Wilkes , father of Ashley, played by Leslie Howard , in the classic film Gone With the Wind (1939). In total, Hickman made around 270 film appearances between 1912 and 1944, making him a busy actor, even if many of his roles were very small in later years. He also served on the board of the Screen Actors Guild . Howard C. Hickman died of a heart attack on New Year's Eve 1949, around a month and a half before his 70th birthday, and was buried in Mount Tamalpais Cemetery in San Rafael .
