Howard Drew ( Howard Porter Drew ; born June 28, 1890 in Lexington , Virginia , † February 19, 1957 ) was an American sprinter .

In 1906 he was one of the few African-American students at the High School of Springfield ( Massachusetts added) However, his education interrupted just after that, because he had to contribute to the livelihood of his family. It was not until 1910 that he was able to attend high school again and soon excelled in various sports.

In 1912 he won the US elimination match for the Olympic Games in Stockholm over 100 m . After he had easily won his prelim in 11.0 s in Stockholm, he set a faster pace in the semifinals. He was leading by a long way when he tore a muscle in his left leg. Although he reached the finish line first in 11.0 s, he had to forego a start in the final. In the same year he became the US 100- yard champion .

The following year he became US indoor champions over 60 yards and US champions over 100 and 220 yards. In 1913 and 1914 he set the world record over 100 yards with 9.6 s and in 1914 the world record over 220 yards on a straight with 21.2 s.

The war-related cancellation of the 1916 Olympic Games deprived him of the chance to make up for the misfortune of 1912. After his military service during the First World War , he finished his studies at Drake University and became a lawyer in Hartford ( Connecticut ). He later became Connecticut's first black judge .
