Howard L. Myers

Howard L. Myers (born March 9, 1930 in Tyrone , Pennsylvania ; died in 1971 , possibly in Florida ) was an American science fiction writer.

After a first short story The Reluctant Weapon , which appeared in the SF magazine Galaxy in 1952 , other publications followed 15 years later, mostly in analogue and under the pseudonym Verge Foray , through which Myers gained a certain fame. His short story series includes the Econo War series of 8 stories, which - partly under pseudonyms - appeared in Analog , Galaxy and Amazing . It is about a distant future in which all material needs are satisfied, but humanity finds out that competition is necessary for the continued existence of civilization and which therefore wages an endless war in which it is imperative to avoid that one side wins .

After his untimely death in 1971, a number of short stories appeared posthumously, as well as Cloud Chamber (1977), Myers' only novel, which is about invaders from an antimatter universe, sex and the rebirth of all intelligent life. All of his work has appeared in The Creatures of Man (2003, contains all Econo-War stories) and A Sense of Infinity (2009, includes Cloud Chamber ) by Baen Books . In German translation only two short stories published in anthologies of Heyne -Verlags.
