Howard Masur

Howard Masur (Oberwolfach 2014)

Howard A. Masur (* 1949 ) is an American mathematician who studies the geometry and dynamics of Teichmüller spaces , low-dimensional topology and combinatorial group theory.

Masur received his doctorate in 1974 from the University of Minnesota-Minneapolis with Albert Marden (The curvature of Teichmuller space). He was a professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago and is a professor at the University of Chicago . He has published with Yair Minsky , Benson Farb , Alex Eskin , Jeffrey Brock and Anton Zorich, among others . In 1980 he received a research grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation ( Sloan Research Fellowship ).

His proof of the Gromov hyperbolicity of the curve complex with Yair Minsky was an important building block in the proof of Thurston's Ending Lamination Conjecture.

He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society . He was invited speaker at the International Mathematicians Congress 1994 in Zurich ( Teichmüller space, dynamics and probability ).
