Howard Raiffa (born January 24, 1924 - † July 8, 2016 ) was an American mathematical statistician , who is known for work in decision theory and game theory .

Life and education

Raiffa studied mathematics at the University of Michigan ( Bachelor 1947, Master 1948), where he received his doctorate in 1952 under Arthur Herbert Copeland (1898-1970) ( Arbitration Schemes for Generalized Two-Person Games ), and was Assistant Professor of Mathematical Statistics at the Columbia University . In 1960 he became a professor (from 1964 Frank Plumpton Ramsey Professor ) at Harvard University . Most recently he was Professor of Managerial Economics at Harvard Business School and Harvard Kennedy School (John F. Kennedy School of Government), of which he was a co-founder. In 1994 he retired. He was the first director of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis in Laxenburg, founded in 1972 .

plant

Raiffa examined conflict resolution strategies and negotiations . In decision theory, he developed an approach based on Bayesian statistics . He was chair of the National Research Council Committee on Risk Analysis and Decision Theory.

Awards and honors

Raiffa also holds multiple honorary doctorates (Carnegie Mellon University, Northwestern University , University of Michigan, Ben-Gurion University ).
