Hoya Meliflua is a plant of the genus of wax flowers ( Hoya ) of the subfamily of asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae).

features

Hoya meliflua is a perennial , epiphytic , climbing plant with 3 to 4 m long shoots. The shoots are branched, somewhat fleshy and glabrous. They are round in cross section and measure 5 mm in diameter. The leaves are stalked, the stems are 1.5 to 2.5 cm long, slightly fleshy to succulent and glabrous. The leaf blades are elongated-ovate, 9 to 13 cm long and 5 to 6 cm wide. They are leathery to fleshy and bare on the top and bottom. The apex is somewhat blunt or pointed, the base wedge-shaped. The leaf blades are dark green with a shiny surface. The midrib is clearly visible and protrudes in a raised manner. Otherwise no leaf veins can be seen.

The ball-shaped inflorescence consists of about 18 to 22 flowers. The inflorescence stalk is round in cross section and 6 to 8 cm long. He is meaty and bald. The flower stalks are thin and 1 to 2.5 cm long. The sepals are broadly ovate-oblong or almost round, 3 mm long and glabrous. The lavender to purple-colored corolla is button-shaped with a diameter of 15 mm. The corolla lobes are broadly triangular, 6 mm long and dense papillae to dense velvety hairy inside. The bald secondary crown has a diameter of 7.5 mm. The tips of the staminal secondary crown are broadly elliptical to triangular. The outer white process is broadly egg-shaped, slightly sunk in the middle. The dark purple inner process is pointed and slightly ascending. The stylus head is conical. The pollinia are keeled on the outside, the caudiculae (translator arms) are very short. The corpusculum is pointed. The flower produces a lot of dark nectar that drips from the flowers (name!). The scent of the flowers is sweet.

The spindle-shaped follicle is 12 cm long and only 7 mm in cross-section. The seed is lanceolate, flat, 6 mm long and 1.5 mm wide in outline. The white head of hair measures 1.5 mm in length.

The species occurs on the islands of Luzon , Mindoro , Palawan , Negros , Leyte and Panay (Philippines) as well as on Borneo .

Taxonomy

Hoya meliflua was first described in 1838 by a clergyman named Francisco Manuel Blanco under the basionym Stapelia meliflua . Elmer Drew Merrill transferred the species to the genus Hoya . Synonyms are Hoya luzonica Schlechter (1904) and Hoya treubiana Schlechter (1908). There are currently five subspecies:

  • Hoya meliflua subsp. meliflua
  • Hoya meliflua subsp. breviora Kloppenb., (2018)
  • Hoya meliflua subsp. escobinae Kloppenb., Conda, Buot & Pitargue (2016)
  • Hoya meliflua subsp. fraterna T. Green, (1995)
  • Hoya meliflua subsp. taytayensis Kloppenb. (2018)
