Hoya obscura is a plant of the genus of wax flowers ( Hoya ) of the subfamily of asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae). It isnative tothe southern part of the island of Luzon ( Philippines ).

features

Hoya obscura grows epiphytically , twining with bushy growth. The main roots are firm and strongly twisted. The bare stem axles, with a diameter of 5 to 8 mm in cross-section, have round peduncles, branching out near their base, which can be lignified.

The leaves are often opposite across the entire stem axis. The bare petioles are about 0.5 to 1.5 cm long and deepened on the upper side. The simple leaf blades are light green, glabrous, smooth and shiny, especially on the upper side of the leaf. They are very variable in size, but the shape hardly varies. They are elliptical to oblong-oval, more or less pointed at the end and measure up to 10 cm in length and up to 4 cm in width. The smaller leaves are almost elliptical, the larger leaves oblong-oval. The base of the leaf blade is broadly rounded or wedge-shaped. The leaf veins are clearly visible because they are usually a little darker. In cultivation, leaves can also turn bronze-red with appropriate fertilization.

The inflorescence is multi-flowered with up to 30 flowers (up to 25 flowers). The compressed inflorescence stem is leathery, glabrous, stiff and up to 5 cm long; it arises from the leaf axes. The flower stalks are also bare and up to 1 cm long. The scent of the flowers is described very differently: "a slight hint of lavender perfume" or "freshly cut citrus fruits" or "subtly spiced honey scent". The flowers stay open for about 6 days. The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The sepals are rounded, about 1.5 mm long and just as wide at the base. The petal tips are bent outwards towards the peduncle. Viewed from above, the crown is flat, rounded to slightly pentagonal and only slightly larger (in diameter) than the secondary crown . The top of the petals is densely covered with fine, short hair. The color varies from cream white, light yellow to pale pink and pink. The corolla is light yellow, yellow or reddish at the base of the corolla lobes.

Occurrence and systematics

Hoya obscura occurs in the southern part of the Philippine island of Luzon , in the provinces of Sorsegon and Laguna .

The holotype material was found by ADE Elmer in July 1916 in tropical forests near Irosin on the Bulusan volcano in the province of Sorsegon (Luzon). The species name was first published in 1923 by Adolph Daniel Edward Elmer (1870-1942) in Elmer Drew Merrill : An Enumeration of Philippine Flowering Plants , 3, p. 352. Then there was a publication by Adolph Daniel Edward Elmer in Notes on Asclepiadaceae. , In: Leaflets of Philippine Botany , 10 (131), Manila 1938, pp. 3543-3599 (description of Hoya obscura on pages 3586 and 3587), this seems to be the valid first description . In 1986 there was another publication by Christine M. Burton : Hoyan , 8, (1), p. 15.
