Hubert Spannring

Hubert Spannring (born September 23, 1862 in Heiligenstatt ; † January 1, 1930 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian sculptor and headmaster.

Life

The son of a forester began studying sculpture at the State Trade School in Salzburg. From 1882 to 1886 he was at the Vienna School of Applied Arts with the sculptor Otto König . From 1886 he was a teacher at the technical school for the wood industry in Villach , in 1903 he took over the management of the technical school for drawing and modeling in Ortisei in Val Gardena . In 1907 he became director of the technical school for wood and stone processing ( HTBLA Hallein ) in Hallein , which he fundamentally modernized in the following years. He retired in 1915 and moved to Salzburg. He ran a workshop there with his daughter Luise (1894–1982). He created grave monuments, portrait medallions and busts which he executed in various materials (wood, plaster, stone, terracotta). The monument to defender Josef Struber on Pass Lueg (1898, bronze) is well known. In later years he turned to the nativity scene. In 1925 he restored the nativity scene in Salzburg Cathedral and in 1927 made nativity scenes for the churches in Weißbach near Lofer and Faistenau . The portrait reliefs of Governor Alois Winkler in Grafenhof (State Clinic St. Veit im Pongau ) and in the Institute for Business Development come from him .

Spannring was valued as a great organizational talent and was active in many committees and associations. He was active in the Salzburg Institute for Business Development and in the Art Association, where he was repeatedly represented in the annual exhibitions from 1886. From 1924 he was a member of the Society for Salzburg Regional Studies, and in 1929 his membership in the House of Nature can be verified. Spannring has received numerous awards, including 1902 professor, 1908 Knight's Cross of the Franz Joseph Order , 1914 k. Council, 1929 Silver Medal of the Republic of Austria . Hubert Spannring was also a successful rower and honorary member of the Villach rowing club.
