Hugo Karl Schmidt

Hugo Karl Schmidt (born November 22, 1909 in Łódź ; † January 19, 2009 in Büchenbach ) was a German Protestant pastor and author.

Life

Schmidt studied theology in Leipzig and Erlangen and then attended the Protestant pastors' seminar in Łódź, since the German theological training was not recognized in Poland. In 1935 he took up his first position as vicar in Rozyszcze in Volhynia . On 17th November 1935 he was appointed as priest ordained from 1936 bis 1939 he was pastor in Tuczyn . From here he looked after a large number of small evangelical communities in Volhynia.

In September 1939, Hugo Karl Schmidt was arrested by the Polish authorities and sent to the Bereza Kartuska concentration camp. Liberated a few weeks later, he was transferred to the Warthegau and became a pastor in Rypin . Here he was appointed superintendent in 1942 .

After the end of the Second World War , Schmidt first came to Erlangen in 1945 , soon afterwards to Roth (near Nuremberg) as pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bavaria and later to Katzwang near Nuremberg . In addition to his parish activities and after his later retirement, he dealt intensively with the evangelical church history of Volhynia and wrote several works on this topic.
