Hugo Mann

Hugo Mann (born November 17, 1913 in Laupheim near Ulm; † December 20, 2008 in Baden-Baden ) was a German entrepreneur.

Life

Mann first did an apprenticeship as a carpenter in his grandfather's company. In 1938 he founded his first furniture business in the Kaiserpassage Karlsruhe . In 1950, Mann opened the first furniture department store on Kaiserstrasse . The business became particularly successful because the company delivered the goods directly to their homes. In 1958 he opened in Karlsruhe on the Durlacher Allee the first value purchase -Verbrauchermarkt. In the 1960s, Mann expanded across Germany. At this time, Mann acquired the area on Weinweg, which he was one of the first entrepreneurs based on the American model to turn it into a shopping center for furniture. In 1961 the administration was also located here on Durlacher Allee.

In 1970 he opened the first Mann Mobilia in Karlsruhe . Shortly thereafter, openings in Wiesbaden and Mannheim followed . In 1975 Mann bought two thirds of the US discount chain FedMart, which existed until 1983. The man who had settled in Baden-Baden retired from management in 1989. His son Johannes Mann became chairman of the management board. In 1997 Wertkauf was sold to the US retail chain Wal-Mart for 500 million US dollars (1.5 billion DM) . In July 2005 Mann Mobilia was sold to the Austrian Lutz Group for 240 million US dollars .

He was married to Rosemarie, the daughter of the founder of Photo Porst , Hanns Porst .
