Hugo Ruf

Hugo Ruf (born April 9, 1925 in Schramberg Württemberg ; † November 1, 1999 in Brauweiler near Cologne ) was a German composer, author, harpsichordist and music professor.

education

From 1946 onwards, Ruf studied harpsichord and historical keyboard instruments with Fritz Neumeyer and performance practice of early music with Gustav Scheck , the first director of the university, at the Freiburg University of Music .

Later study visits also took him to Munich and Paris.

Cologne University of Music

Ruf has taught harpsichord at the Cologne Music Academy since 1967 . In 1971 he was appointed full professor . At the same time he led the seminar for early music. He is one of the most important editors of baroque chamber music . His catalog raisonné at the German National Library has over 400 items. In 1984 he was awarded the German Record Critics' Prize for recording three harpsichord sonatas by Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (EMI).

Hugo Ruf was married to the flute virtuoso Beatrice Ruf until his death and is the father of the flautist Reinhard Ruf, who lives with his family in the Rhineland.
